The Legatum Institute attended the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town on 4th and 5th September 2019.

World Economic Forum on Africa

We were delighted to participate in the World Economic Forum on Africa. We hosted two workshops on African Prosperity, where the Legatum Institute collaborated with local experts and leading academics, as well as with entrepreneurs and policy-makers.

During the course of these round-table events, we drew on the knowledge and expertise of those present to help us understand the reality of the lived experiences of African people, right across the continent.

The information and experiences shared have been, and will continue to be used to inform our work and understanding of how prosperity is being realised in each of Africa’s 54 nations.

An African Prosperity Report

Agenda 2063 is Africa’s master plan for transforming the continent into the global powerhouse of the future. It is the strategic framework that aims to deliver on its goal for inclusive and sustainable development and is a manifestation of the pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity. By measuring the combination of conditions required for prosperity – open economies, inclusive societies and empowered people – nations can truly assess their trajectory and seize opportunities to deliver genuine economic and social wellbeing.

This workshop presented insights from the Legatum Institute’s 13 years’ experience measuring global prosperity via the global Prosperity Index and previewed our forthcoming Africa Prosperity Report. It was a collaborative session where guests were able to interrogate our emerging findings and informed our understanding of the lived experience of Africans across the continent, and the opportunities and challenges ahead.

Accelerating the pathways to prosperity

Prosperity entails much more than wealth; it reaches beyond the financial and into the political, the judicial, the wellbeing and character of a nation. It is about creating an environment where people are able to reach their full potential. A nation is prosperous when it has an open economy, an inclusive society with strong institutions, and empowered people who are healthy, educated and safe.

In collaboration with The END Fund and the African Philanthropy Forum, the Legatum Institute encouraged a discussion around the drivers of economic and social wellbeing across the African continent and considered how governments, corporations, charities and philanthropists can together build on the momentum and accelerate the pathways to prosperity.
